Os modelos de mesoescala são ferramentas que demandam investimentos relativamente baixos e vem apresentando resultados favoráveis. Porém, também possuem limitações, por exemplo, a dificuldade em representar a turbulência, esta dificuldade está intrinsecamente relacionada à impossibilidade em reproduzir os processos físicos de trocas turbulentas de momento, energia e massa, entre superfície e atmosfera. Visto essas limitações este trabalho apresenta uma série de testes de sensibilidade entre o modelo de mesoescala WRF configurado com diferentes parametrizações físicas e a velocidade do vento medida em estações meteorológicas automáticas do INMET situadas no NEB. O modelo WRF foi configurado com 3 domínio de resolução 5 x 5 km sobre a região em estudo, a localização desta grades se obteve a partir de uma análise de agrupamento realizada previamente com dados de intensidade do vento de 121 EMA do NEB para o período de 2008 a 2013. Os testes de sensibilidade configuraram um total de 12 experimentos, para os 3 primeiros dias do mês de maio de 2009. Ao analisar os resultados observa-se que independente das parametrizações adotadas, há uma forte tendência a superestimação da intensidade dos ventos pelo modelo WRF para as 13 localidades escolhidas para realizar análise estatística do erro quadrático médio e viés. Como erra esperado algumas parametrizações são mais adequadas para um domínio do que para outro, em função do NEB ser influenciado por diferentes sistemas meteorológicos, por exemplo, o ciclo anual da precipitação do litoral leste é diferente ao da região central do NEB.

Analysis of extreme precipitation events in different time scales over Santos is presented using the rain gauge network for the period 19802015. Located in the humid tropics, the area presents high annual total rainfall, particularly concentrated in spring and summer. However, the rainiest monthJanuarywas also the one with the most homogeneous distribution. More than 40% of the days presented precipitation, which ranged from 0.1 to 332.9 mm. The precipitation variability was quite high, a fact observed in all scales evaluated, which reveals that the mechanisms that generate precipitation in the area are distinct throughout the year. The high precipitation variability is particularly important in the case of daily distribution: for instance, 25% of the rainy days responded for 71% of the total rainfall. Such concentration is a key element in the outbreak of numerous hazards, such as floods and landslides, that cause extensive property damage and loss of life, being the worst situations registered when extreme precipitation episodes coincide with storm surges.

Os módulos fotovoltaicos são avaliados de acordo com as condições padrões de teste (irradiância de 1000 W/m2 , temperatura do módulo de 25°C e o espectro da radiação descrito nas normas IEC, ASTM ou ABNT). Porém tais condições raramente ocorrem em campo ao mesmo tempo, de modo que a eficiência medida em laboratório dificilmente acontecerá durante o tempo de vida dos módulos. Considerando que os efeitos causados nos módulos fotovoltaicos de silício amorfo (a-Si) e monocristalino (m-Si) pelas variações espectrais ainda não são muito bem compreendidas, foi realizado um estudo em campo descrito neste trabalho. Para tanto, dois sistemas de coletas de dados foram instalados no campus do INPE em Cachoeira Paulista SP: um para coleta dos espectros da radiação solar e outro para monitoramento dos módulos fotovoltaicos. Dos dados gerados por estes sistemas, somente os coletados às 12:00 horas entre os meses de agosto de 2015 e janeiro de 2016 foram utilizados neste trabalho, tendo sido eles classificados em dados de céu limpo, parcialmente nublado ou nublado de acordo com o índice de limpidez calculado com dados fornecidos pela rede SONDA. De acordo com os resultados das análises dos dados, dias nublados apresentam espectros com maiores valores de energia média dos fótons e melhor aproveitamento pelos módulos de a-Si e m-Si quando comparados com os espectros descritos nas normas. Também foi possível observar que o módulo de m-Si sofreu menor influência das variações espectrais do que o módulo de a-Si devido ao efeito chamado de efeito de compensação.

The Amazonian forest’s ability to provide environmental services is threatened by anthropogenic forcing at various scales, such as deforestation, fire, global and regional climate change, and extreme events. In addition to the impacts resulting from each one of these drivers, the synergistic effects potentially increase the risks. In the light of the above, this chapter aims to evaluate the future prospects for the Amazon in a scenario of 4 °C or higher warming resulting from anthropogenic climate change and the related hydrological cycle changes. Future climate scenarios project progressively higher warming that may exceed 4 °C in Amazonia in the second half of the century, particularly during the dry season in the region. Associated with these scenarios, it is projected a reduction of precipitation year-round, being a substantial reduction predominantly in the dry and transition seasons and smaller reductions of the order of 5% for the SH summer. Evaluating the consequences of such substantial climatic change, several negative effects in Amazonia can be anticipated, including short-term hydrological changes similar to the events associated to the extreme 2005 and 2010 droughts, and longer time-scale modifications of broad scale characteristics such as different biome distribution. Based on hydrological models, it is generally expected a reduction in river discharges associated to precipitation decreases and temperature increases brought about by projected climate change, but with the magnitude of the changes differing between models. The future climate change scenarios imply important changes in biomes distribution over Amazonia, with potential expansion of savannah and caatinga over large areas currently occupied by tropical forests. It is necessary a reduction to nearly zero in tropical deforestation and reducing land-cover emissions and mitigating climate change to avoid a dangerous interference with the ability of natural ecosystems to adapt to these possible changes.

The objective of this work is to assess the projections of climate change in the city of Santos. The assessment is based on the downscaling of two global climate model simulations using the Eta Regional Climate Model at 20-km and 5-km resolutions, under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios for the period between 1961 and 2100. The higher horizontal resolution simulations reproduce in more detail the surface characteristics, such as the topography, vegetation cover, and coastline, and capture the extreme climate events. Evaluation of the model simulations of the present climate show reasonable agreement with observed climatology. Frequency distributions of precipitation and temperature values show that the 5-km run approaches the observed precipitation better than the 20-km resolution run. The assessment of climate change projections indicates that warming in the region reaches about 2 °C until the end of the twenty-first century, and that precipitation reduces in the entire region. Trends of climatic extreme indices show increase of hot days, warm nights, and in the length of consecutive dry days with the increase of the atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations. Projections of the minimum surface pressure off the coast of Southeast Brazil show weakening tendency under RCP8.5 scenario.

Changes in natural environments caused by human activities through land use and land cover changes (LUCC) have increased during the last three centuries. LUCC is a key sector of climate change, and it is responsible for an important amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) activities were responsible for ~ 1012 Gt CO2eq yr− 1 of anthropogenic GHG emissions mainly from deforestation and agricultural emissions. In Brazil, due to a rise in forest clearing, total gross emissions have increased over the 20142015 period. This chapter aims to: (i) explore the impact of the LUCC on the soil components and structures, (ii) assess the LUCC effects on GHG emissions, (iii) review the history of LUCC in Brazil from 2000 to present days, and (iv) assess the role of LUCC in Brazil in the global framework of GHG emissions.

During the last three decades, intensive campaigns and experiments have been conducted for acquiring micrometeorological data in the Amazonian ecosystems, which has increased our understanding of the variation, especially seasonally, of the total energy available for the atmospheric heating process by the surface, evapotranspiration and carbon exchanges. However, the measurements obtained by such experiments generally cover small areas and are not representative of the spatial variability of these processes. This chapter aims to discuss several algorithms developed to estimate surface energy and carbon fluxes combining satellite data and micrometeorological observations, highlighting the potentialities and limitations of such models for applications in the Amazon region. We show that the use of these models presents an important role in understanding the spatial and temporal patterns of biophysical surface parameters in a region where most of the information is local. Data generated may be used as inputs in earth system surface models allowing the evaluation of the impact, both in regional as well as global scales, caused by land-use and land-cover changes.

A substituição de ecossistemas naturais por sistemas agropecuários resulta, frequentemente, no declínio do teor de carbono (C) orgânico do solo, em função da redução do aporte, perdas por erosão e da taxa de decomposição da matéria orgânica. Baseando-se neste contexto, este trabalho teve por objetivo comparar os teores de matéria orgânica do solo (MOS), de carbono orgânico total (COT), e os estoques de carbono de um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo sob diferentes sistemas de manejo e uso da terra, sendo eles: mata nativa, área reflorestada com eucalipto, pastagem e sistema agroflorestal (SAF) com o cultivo de urucum e seringueira. As amostras deformadas para determinação da MOS e do COT foram coletadas no Polo Centro Norte (APTA), no município de Pindorama, SP, nas profundidades de 0,0 0,2 m e 0,2 0,4 m. Cada sistema de uso da terra (SUTs) foi dividido em cinco parcelas e, em cada parcela foram coletadas quatro amostras em cada profundidade. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a mata nativa sobressaiu em relação aos demais SUTs (eucalipto, pastagem e SAF), apresentando maiores teores de MOS e COT e, consequentemente, um estoque de C no solo de 34,40 ton ha-1 na profundidade de 0,0 0,2 m. Observou-se também, que o estoque de C do solo e a concentração de MOS e COT diminuíram ao longo do perfil do solo, apresentando maiores valores na camada superficial em todos os SUTs. Conclui-se que o manejo dos SUTs pode contribuir para uma melhor sustentabilidade agrícola, visto que esse influenciou os resultados.
