The chapter examines the forms and possibilities of progressive politics in the context of climate change. Environmental movement actors have often advanced mainstream green progressive discourse in political and media spheres. At the same time, grassroots actors and more radical versions of green progressive discourse and actions have a harder time gaining traction in policy networks and achieving mass media visibility. We provide an overview of the emergence and globalization of the environmental coalition regarding climate change. Then, drawing on the cases of India, Finland, Brazil, and Canada, we examine the diverse politics of actors that make up the environmental coalition. Our analysis illustrates how progressive coalitions and politics emerge in varied political and cultural contexts, how these alignments are shaped by the global climate regime and critical events, and how and why these alignments gain or lose strength over time.

Over the past few years, the Amazonia region has experienced a notable increase in fire occurrences, primarily attributed to agricultural management and territorial possession. This increase has, in turn, led to as rise in atmospheric concentrations of pollutants. This chapter presents an observational analysis of the number of fire hotspots and fire radiative power (FRP) across the Legal Amazonia region, alongside the concentration of pollutants in the atmosphere and near the surface, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from OMI sensor on board the AURA satellite; and carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) from MERRA-2 reanalysis. The primary objective is to assess the changes in spatial and temporal patterns of these air pollutants from 2016 to 2021. Throughout the study period in the Legal Amazonian region, Para State recorded the highest number of fires (193,218), followed by Mato Grosso (177,641), Maranhao (84,760), Amazonas (78,557), Tocantins (73,925), Rondonia (65,447), Acre (45,428), Roraima (15,521), and Amapa (8,450) States. The highest numbers of fire hotspots, FRP and concentrations of NO2, SO2, OC, BC, and CO are observed from July through October, aligning with the months of lowest precipitation and relative humidity. The results also reveal that burning biomass raises gas concentration across the region, particularly in the southern part of Mato Grosso near the city of Cuiabá. Gas concentrations increase threefold throughout the entire studied region from March, April, and May to August, September, and October for NO2 (2.5 to 7.5 1014 mol cm−2), BC (0.13 to 0.45 micro g m−3), and OC (3 to 9 micro g m−3), indicating the deterioration of the air quality during the fire season.

In this work, we analyze the AERONETs solar photometer Aerosol Optical Depth from four stations in Brazil to investigate the scale-invariant behavior using the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. The selected stations have different levels of exposure to pollution in a year and exhibit long-term correlation and multifractal behavior. All three measures, viz., the generalized Hurst exponent, mass exponent, and multifractal spectrum quantifies the multifractal behavior. For all the four stations, the fluctuations quantified by the Hurst exponent varying between 0.6 and 1.8 indicate long-term correlations in the data. Non-linear variation of the mass exponent with negative and positive moments, and the width of the multifractal spectra, between 0.5 and 1.27 confirm the multifractal behavior. To summarize, for the chosen stations the multifractal analysis is able to distinguish between sites influenced by biomass burning emissions from the urbanized ones. Results for all sites show the sensitivity to larger temporal scales.

Apesar da bem reconhecida influência do clima na agricultura, a modelagem agrometeorológica é relativamente recente. Em diversas áreas da ciência, como meteorologia, agronomia e hidrologia, os modelos desempenham um papel crucial ao simular processos complexos por meio de estruturas matemáticas ou computacionais. A modelagem agrometeorológica desempenha, por sua vez, um papel fundamental ao simular o comportamento das culturas, ciclos de crescimento e respostas às condições ambientais, contribuindo tanto para a compreensão científica quanto para embasar a tomada de decisões. Neste contexto, o presente capítulo oferece uma análise abrangente do impacto dos elementos meteorológicos no crescimento e desenvolvimento das culturas agrícolas. Além disso, explora diversas categorias de modelos agrometeorológicos, enfatizando sua aplicação. A diversidade de aplicações se estende também à gestão de recursos hídricos e energéticos por meio da modelagem integrada agro- -hidrológica. Além disso, o capítulo busca apresentar abordagens para enfrentar as principais limitações associadas à modelagem agrometeorológica.

As atividades antrópicas nas bacias de drenagem frequentemente causam impactos significativos na qualidade da água e nos ecossistemas aquáticos, resultando em consequências ambientais prejudiciais que alteram a qualidade da água dos rios, isto é, seu fluxo e sua composição química. Neste estudo, o objetivo foi o de analisar a concentração de nutrientes no rio Paraíba do Meio, Alagoas, e sua conformidade com a Resolução do CONAMA n° 357/2005 durante os anos hidrológicos de 2016 e 2017, para saber se a qualidade da água rio está dentro dos padrões ambientais sugeridos. Os dados referentes aos parâmetros limnológicos da água analisados na seção do rio Paraíba do Meio considerada nesta pesquisa, situada na região da ponte rodoviária sobre o referido rio (BR-316), no município de Pilar (AL), onde se concentram atividades industriais, urbanas e agrícolas, foram obtidos a partir do Banco de dados do laboratório de Geoquímica Ambiental (IGDEMA-UFAL), com periodicidade mensal de 16 de janeiro de 2016 a 17 de dezembro de 2017. Apesar de boa parte dos valores mensais de alguns dos parâmetros apresentarem valores dentro dos padrões estabelecidos pelo CONAMA, os resultados revelaram concentrações significativas de ortofosfato e das diferentes formas de nitrogênio inorgânico dissolvido encontradas em ecossistemas aquáticos, como nitrito, nitrato e amônio, indicando potencial poluição, bem como alguns dos demais parâmetros limnológicos analisados, os quais também apresentaram valores mensais acima dos limites estabelecidos pela resolução do CONAMA supracitada, um sinal de degradação, especialmente nas áreas urbanas, o que ressalta a necessidade de ações mais efetivas por parte das autoridades para gerenciar os recursos hídricos do rio Paraíba do Meio, uma vez que, a gestão sustentável das bacias de drenagem é urgente, buscando a harmonia entre as necessidades humanas e a conservação dos ecossistemas aquáticos, garantindo que as gerações futuras tenham acesso à água de qualidade e ecossistemas saudáveis.

A superfície continental e a atmosfera estão conectadas em diversos aspectos que envolvem troca de energia, momentum e elementos entre elas. Da atmosfera vem a energia e a água necessários para os processos associados ao crescimento e manutenção de vegetação. A vegetação, por sua vez, absorve CO2 atmosférico e transpira H2 O, podendo funcionar como sumidouro de carbono e fonte de água. Na biosfera terrestre, o ciclo da água e dos elementos está conectado em diversos aspectos. A disponibilidade de água no solo modula a produtividade primária líquida, e pode alterar as atividades biogeoquímicas associadas à decomposição de matéria orgânica e os processos associados à respiração do solo e de raízes. Todos esses processos são bastante sensíveis às mudanças climáticas e mudanças no uso e cobertura do solo, o que torna fundamental uma boa representação deles em modelos do sistema terrestre, tanto para previsões de tempo quanto para projeções climáticas mais confiáveis. Este capítulo aborda os principais processos de interação entre a biosfera e a atmosfera, com foco nos fluxos de energia e nos ciclos da água e carbono, e também as estratégias para a modelagem dessas interações.

Com o aumento da frequência dos desastres naturais, a antecipação de eventos hidro meteorológicos com potencial de causar danos à população e meio ambiente é cada vez mais urgente. Neste contexto, o presente capítulo visa abordar o papel da modelagem hidrológica como componente fundamental para um sistema de alerta, fornecendo exemplos do potencial de implementação desta ferramenta em diversas regiões do Brasil. Adicionalmente, são discutidos alguns dos desafios que persistem para a previsão de desastres, como a necessidade de aprimorar a precisão das previsões de precipitação, integração de modelos atmosféricos e hidrológicos e as incertezas inerentes à modelagem. Essa análise visa elucidar sobre a necessidade contínua de busca por estratégias eficazes de monitoramento e melhoria da resposta a desastres naturais no Brasil.

With the world tackling energy shortages, geopolitical struggles over energy supply, and dramatic environmental changes, the importance of integrated energy is emerging as a key approach for the much-needed worldwide energy transition. Integrated energy connects the energy-related sectors of electricity, heat, cooling, and transport in a way that a greater proportion of renewable energy can be efficiently used, aiming at sustainable energy supply and the alleviation of environmental and health impacts. The integrated energy approach views energy as a dynamic input to promote economic development and energy security, especially in geographic areas usually excluded under traditional energy planning. In this chapter, the authors first present the concept of integrated energy systems including challenges and opportunities. Second, they introduce the perspective of integrated energy in Brazil. Last, they discuss the vital elements, such as the formation of agenda setting and diversity of actors, as a path to design a policy framework for integrated energy systems.

Inthischapter,thedescriptionofthemethodcalledGeneralized Extremal Optimization (GEO) is presented, including a brief history, the algorithm, and its application to the inverse radiative transfer problem, for the determination of the optical thickness, single scattering albedo, and diffuse reflectivities in the internal part of the boundary surfaces of one-dimensional homogeneous participating media. The results obtained with a variant of the canonical method, called GEOSubscript v a r var,are compared with those obtained with the GA and SA methods, as well as with a hybridization of the GEO method with the SA method (GEO+SA).
