Although Brazil has an abundance of water resources, boasting 13% of the available fresh water of the planet (ANA, 2017), its distribution is naturally unequal. Water availability in Brazil depends largely on the climate and therefore, the risks of climate change, whether of anthropogenic or natural origin, could threaten supplies (Marengo, 2008). Population and demand for water in the SPMA are increasing. Such threshold situation has consequences to the availability and use of this resource (Gaviolli, 2013). Between 2014 and 2015, the Greater São Paulo experienced a severe drought, the worst in its history. Its main water systems were left depleted and with the lowest water levels ever recorded (ANA, 2015). Daily water rationing became part of the routine for many inhabitants of the region. Since then, more reservoirs have been under construction to capture more water in order to ensure water provision to the population, raising questions of whether technical solutions are preferred rather than a more sustainable management of the water resources. The watersheds within the São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA) supply water to most reservoirs in the region. The state watershed plan lays out a set of strict constraints in legislation in order to protect and restore the watersheds, leaving the populations from those areas unable to develop economically or socially.

Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo para calibração de denuderes com amostragem de espécies reativas de nitrogênio em sua forma gasosa (HNO3, HONO e NH3). A calibração é necessária para que as amostragens forneçam resultados de concentração atmosférica das espécies de interesse, de forma precisa, auxiliando nos requisitos de qualidade. O objetivo específico deste estudo é desenvolver protocolos de calibração de denuderes, específicos para amostragens atmosféricas, com ênfase no estudo das espécies inorgânicas reativas de nitrogênio tanto na fase gasosa como na fase particulada. A técnica empregada constituiu-se na construção de uma curva de calibração com base em concentrações conhecidas. O método empregado teve como base a captura de gases na atmosfera da caixa do experimento, utilizando-se denuderes, impregnados com uma solução absorvedora das espécies de interesse. O sistema de calibração é composto por uma câmara, onde é bombeado o ar limpo com uma concentração conhecida do reagente específico, contendo denuder revestido com a solução específica. O Sistema serve para verificar se o sistema está capturando eficientemente as espécies químicas de interesse. Os reagentes utilizados foram HCl, HNO3 e NH4OH. Com os resultados obtidos, as curvas apresentaram variações altas, o que não era esperado. Essas curvas evidenciam que a escolha dos volumes de injeção não foi apropriada, na próxima etapa serão injetados volumes maiores. Até o momento, é possível concluir que o volume injetado, não é reprodutivo. O próximo passo será aumentar o volume de injeção e realizar a extração do material em duplicata, o estudo será iniciado com a solução de NH4OH. Com essa alteração espera-se que o volume da injeção se torne mais reprodutivo.

The Brazilian Amazon is one of the biggest and most important biomes of the world. This biome, be it because of natural causes or human action, has undergone alterations that can lead to socioeconomic and political problems for the Brazilian nation. Some of these changes, such as deforestation, are detectable through information extracted from remote sensing data. The monitoring of deforestation has been carried out, mainly by INPE, over the years using optical data. The information contained in this type of data is strongly compromised if the imaged region has intense cloud coverage, as is the case of some areas in the Brazilian Amazon. Thus, the use of microwave data is a feasible solution for the monitoring of regions with cloud coverage. This study is based on this context, by an attempt to evidence the use of SAR data for the mapping of deforested areas between the years 2008 and 2010 in the region around the Tapajós National Forest.

Many agencies have been producing land cover data with different definition, number and type of classes. In order to compare two data sets created using different legends and/or classification systems, it is necessary to carry out a harmonization process. This work aims to present and evaluate a harmonization process between two Land Cover Meta Language (LCML) formalized legends. To this purpose, two types of land cover legends obtained from maps from satellite images generated for Amazon region were analyzed and had their legends harmonized based on two approaches: 1) considering the semantic meaning of the classes and; 2) considering LCML descriptors and thresholds. The land cover maps generated with optical and SAR data were reclassified considering the harmonized legends proposed and were evaluated in terms of accuracy and agreement of the classes. For this analysis it was necessary to convert the land cover mappings to the same format and projection, and to solve problems of miss-registration. Although the harmonization process has shown to be effective, not all of the classes from TerraClass legend could be harmonized to the classes of the two maps analyzed.

Large tropical forests like the Amazon, important in carbon and water cycling, constantly are targets for climate change research and studies on the seasonality of the vegetation that seek to correlate the various types of data in order to develop theoretical models, obtain projections or thresholds for different phenomena, vegetation mechanisms, climate feedback from changes in forest behavior and possible relationships with global climate change, however, all currently used techniques have limitations that may hinder complex analysis. Data obtained locally are generally known as field truth, but imply high costs and therefore are not performed on a large scale. As far as the data obtained by remote orbital sensors are concerned, the limitations generally lie in the temporal and spatial scales covered by the sensors, in the interferences and noise of the signal received by the sensor and also in its ability to indicate, with relative fidelity, processes of operation of the terrestrial system occurring in situ. This study aimed to identify and assess the main variables used in the study of seasonal dynamics of the Amazon rainforest. The variables identified were the vegetation indices NDVI and EVI, the Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), the Solar-Induced Fluorescence (SIF) and the Evapotranspiration.

Nos primeiros minutos do dia 5 de junho de 2016 o município de Campinas registrou intensa precipitação, inclusive com granizo, considerável número de descargas atmosféricas e ventos fortíssimos, que causaram grandes destruições; ocorrências similares foram verificadas em cidades vizinhas. Não houve registro de óbitos, provavelmente em virtude do horário (00:20h) e dia (domingo). As áreas afetadas foram bairros de classe média a média alta, com residências sólidas, o que atesta a energia do fenômeno pela destruição causada. Mesmo distante do local, as imagens do radar de Bauru sugerem ter havido movimento rotacional, característico de células tornádicas, ainda que não tenha havido registro fotográfico ou vídeo do fenômeno. O padrão de destruição atesta que se tratou de uma perturbação muito forte, tendo chamado a atenção o retorcimento de estruturas e galhos de árvores, objetos lançados por distâncias superiores a 50 m. e árvores frondosas arrancadas pela raiz, o que sugere que tenha sido um tornado. As ações pós-evento foram rápidas, mas não houve alerta de que um distúrbio tão forte atingiria esse município de mais de 1 milhão de habitantes, demonstrando que Campinas (e provavelmente outros municípios brasileiros) não está preparada para o advento desse tipo de fenômeno, relativamente comum na região.

Este trabalho está compreendido no desenvolvimento de conhecimento de potencialidades e de desempenhos de mapeamentos de uso e cobertura da terra que possam ser utilizados para o Modelo Brasileiro de Uso da Terra LuccME/Brasil. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste projeto é o de produção de mapas de referência distribuídos de forma aleatória amostral estratificada. O elemento amostral é por segmento regular de 20x20km (quadrículas) e sua distribuição segue uma estratificação baseada em dados censitários que inferem os diferentes tipos de uso e cobertura predominantes no país. Foi definido um conjunto de classes comum a todos os mapeamentos envolvidos, sendo: vegetação natural, silvicultura, pastagem, agricultura, vegetação secundária, mosaico de ocupações, área urbana, outros, sem identificação. A produção do mapeamento de referência tem como ano de referência 2010/2011 e estão sendo utilizadas imagens do sensor RapidEye e TM/Landsat. A fim de compatibilizar a resolução espacial de 5 metros do RapidEye, são processadas restaurações das bandas 3, 4 e 5 das imagens do sensor TM, conforme Boggione (2003). Da mesma forma, para compatibilizar as resoluções radiométricas de ambos os sensores, as bandas 2, 3, 4 e 5 das imagens RapidEye foram transformadas para 8 bits. Para verificação de vegetação secundária, contexto temporal e para contornar possíveis dúvidas, algumas observações tem sido importantes, dentre elas: uso de imagens TM do ano 2000 para definição de vegetação secundária; comportamento espectral de EVI2 extraídos de imagens Modis na página WEB www.dsr.inpe.br/laf/series/ e de imagens DigitalGlobe disponíveis no Google Earth. O processamento de mapeamento tem sido elaborado via classificação digital e posterior edição matricial pelo software SPRING. Tem sido utilizado um classificador supervisionado via segmentação de imagens, o Bhattacharya. Devido a mudança dos prazos previstos para este projeto de Iniciação Científica, o mesmo teve algumas mudanças de quanto ao seu objetivo e até o presente momento foi possível classificar apenas algumas quadrículas.

This work aimed to identify possible changes in climatic variables in a region of agricultural frontier in the transition between the Savannah-Amazon biomes, where forests were replaced by extensive agricultural areas. Recent episodes of drought and extremes rains in this region have represented large economic losses for agricultural producers. Therefore, some questions arose, guiding this research: The recent climatic instability can be related to the intense in the land use and land cover changes through which the region experienced? Can older producers feel any change in the weather from earlier or more recent times? How do producers understand this instability in the climate? How do local institutions such as the Secretariats of Agriculture and Environment and producer associations address the issues about climate change? In response to these questions, we hope that this work will contribute to the discussion about the necessity to bring relevant scientific information to society in a more accessible way, contributing to improve the level of awareness about climate change by actors directly linked to agriculture, aiming that perceive themselves inside in this system as the agent causative and agent impacted by the changes in the local climate.
