The study aims to assess the changes in the fluxes of the three main greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and N2O) due to land use changes (LUC) in the Brazilian semi-arid region during dry season (October to December) and rainy season (April-July). This region is known as Caatinga and has unique features, and covers about 11 % of the Brazilian territory (about 850 km2). It is a densely populated region and the shifting of native vegetation to pasture stands out among the major environmental problems related to the changes in land use and land occupation. Pastures and agricultural areas cover about 27 % of the Caatinga (201,786 m2 ). Such drastic changes in land together with the conditions of low nutrient availability in soils and irregular rainfall events, usually leads to soil degradation with direct effects on the dynamics of CO2, N2O and CH4. This experiment was conducted in the municipality of São João, in Pernambuco State (8◦5230″ S, 36◦2200″ W), in an Entisol with predominantly sandy texture. Samplings were performed in April 2012 (dry season) and August 2013 (rainy season). The fluxes were measured using static PVC chambers in periods of 30 minutes, and the design of this experiment consisted of two treatments: Native Vegetation – Caatinga (C) and grassland (P), distributed in 3 blocks (replicates). The CO2 fluxes were higher during the dry season (One-way ANOVA, p=0.000), with the highest emissions found in grassland (4.6 g m-2 d-1) and the lowest in the Caatinga (3.2 g m-2 d-1). During rainy season, there was no difference between treatments, and CO2 fluxes in Caating and grassland were, respectively, 3.4 g m2 d-1 and 3.6 m g -2 d-1. High emissions of N2O were found during the dry season (One-way ANOVA, p= 0.000), and the highest emissions were found in grassland (0.66 mg m2 d-1) and the lowest in the Caatinga (0.33 mg m2 d-1). During the rainy season there was no significant difference between treatments, and the fluxes were 0.03 mg m2 d-1 in the grassland and 0.01 mg m-2 d-1 in the Caatinga. There was no significant difference between fluxes of CH4 for treatments or seasons. During dry season, high soil temperatures (31.3 ◦C) were observed, which was 17 % higher than the temperature measured in the rainy season (24.5 ◦C), and air temperature (29.6 ◦C), which was 10% higher than the temperature found in the rainy season (25.5 ◦C). These preliminary results may suggest a possible trend of increasing CO2 and N2O by elevation of temperature, which is strongly influenced by changes in land cover in this biome. The results of this research will also be used for future comparisons with similar regions located in the Brazilian Northeast, as well as in other semi-arid regions of the planet.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar a dinâmica da cultura de eucalipto e a sua expansão sobre a região do Vale do Paraíba Paulista. Através do SPRING Sistema de Informação Geográfica desenvolvido pelo INPE Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais -, foi realizado o processamento e classificação de imagens do satélite Landsat 5 utilizando o NDVI Índice de Vegetação Normalizado pela Diferença que permitiu a divisão da vegetação em classes de Floresta, Não Floresta e Transição. Após este processo, foi utilizado um classificador automático para a classificação da região nas várias classes de interesses de estudo. A pesquisa realizada consiste em uma análise multitemporal da região no período entre 1986 e 2010, com recortes de cinco anos, concluída no último ano com as classificações de 2000 e 2005, completando o ciclo de estudo proposto. Com os dados de classificação realizados, foram relacionados os dados do Censo do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) para todo o período possibilitando a avaliação econômica da área. Verifica-se que entre 2000 e 2005 houve uma diminuição da área de lavoura temporária de 34.639ha para 31.680ha e nota-se uma dependência do setor em relação às indústrias de papel e celulose. As características geomorfológicas da bacia foram extraídas a partir do Modelo Digital de Elevação obtido por meio do SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mision), utilizando o SIG Terra/Hidro. O Algoritmo HAND (Height Above the Nearest Drainage) possibilitou a divisão do terreno em diferentes ambientes hidromorfológicos. Este procedimento permitiu identificar os ambientes onde há predominância da cultura de eucaliptos, relacionando-os com a rede de drenagem. Com os últimos anos adicionados, foi observado um crescimento de áreas de silvicultura e sua predominância em áreas de vertentes e o resultados para os anos de 2000 e 2005 foram os seguintes, respectivamente: em áreas de vertentes um total de 54% e 47%; em topos de morro 26% e 27% e em baixio 20% e 26%.

No cenário atual, o incentivo aplicado ao desenvolvimento de tecnologia para a geração de energia eólica tem sido motivado basicamente por duas grandes preocupações: (i) mudanças climáticas globais; (ii) aumento da segurança energética por meio da diversificação das fontes de energia utilizadas para a geração de eletricidade. A avaliação do regime de vento de forma confiável para uma determinada região por meio de coleta de dados com precisão adequada apresenta um alto custo financeiro. Os modelos meteorológicos de mesoescala são ferramentas que demandam investimentos relativamente baixos e confiáveis. Porém, apresentam diversas limitações como a dificuldade em representar a turbulência na CLP. Esta dificuldade está intrinsecamente relacionada à impossibilidade em reproduzir os processos físicos de trocas turbulentas de momento, energia e massa, entre superfície e atmosfera. O objetivo do projeto é realizar uma avaliação criteriosa para a estimativa e previsão de curto prazo e alta resolução do potencial eólico em alta resolução espacial através de simulações com duas versões do modelo WRF (WRF-Real e WRF-LES) para algumas regiões do Nordeste do Brasil.

We report upward lightning observations in São Paulo city, SP, Brazil and compare to data from Lightning Location System (LLS). Those data were provided by 4 different networks from different technologies: BrasilDAT, RINDAT, Worldwide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN), and Earth Networks Global Lightning Network (ENGLN). Several upward flashes were observed from 20122014 using GPS time-stamped optical sensors and electric field measurements. These upward flashes were initiated from tall towers located at Jaragua Peak (90 and 130 m) and along Paulista Avenue (23 towers with heights between 50 and 220m). Time-correlated analyzes allowed to evaluate the network detection efficiency, intracloud (IC) / cloud-to-ground (CG) misclassification percentage, and location accuracy of the 4 different LLS. We will also show how different upward flash physical processes (leader initiation, recoil leaders, return strokes) are detected and classified by the distinct LLS technologies. Preliminary results show that in general, recoil leaders were not detected; on the other hand, several cases of return strokes and some cases of M-component were detected by one or more LLS networks.

The Wetlands of the Bolivian lowlands, in the southwestern portion of the Amazon Basin, are of great importance for hydrological and biogeochemical cycles for the whole basin: The proximity and influence of the Andes mountain range determines a high spatial and temporal variability of floods; the great proportion of herbaceous floodplains, the highest among the Amazon, defines a wide floodable area that retains different types of water an sediments from upstream. In addition, these extensive wetlands may play a role in climate regulation since they are relevant to energy fluxes and carbon cycle. Environmental change, mainly land use change, infrastructure projects and climate change-variability, are threatening the complex hydrological cycle in this area, where periodic flooding is crucial for human populations and ecosystems. Extreme climatic events have derived in great economic impacts while further damages in ecosystems and local populations are still undetermined. There is a lack of knowledge about wetlands and their functions. This, together with the disparity between perception and scientific evidence of environmental change impacts, are leading to null or inadequate responses. Thus, there is a growing demand to understand the functioning and dynamics of these wetlands. In this study, we integrate remote sensing with hydrologic modeling to represent flood processes in the Mamore and Itenez-Guapore basins. This approach make possible to study interactions between wetlands and the hydrometeorological regime of the watershed in an integral way and to provide elements for inferring the impacts of environmental change. This research contemplates different phases: flood mapping using remote sensing techniques, with passive and active systems (MODIS and ALOS-PALSAR), that will assist the parameterization of numerical routines for floodplains simulation in a hydrological model (MHD-INPE model); the simulation and analysis of the model outputs in terms of hydrometeorological processes and its influences on flood dynamics. This study will provide relevant information to ongoing scientific initiatives that seek to understand the landscape fragmentation processes during the Holocene and to delineate water resources management strategies in the Bolivian Lowlands.

As mudanças globais ocorrem provocadas por fenômenos naturais ou por ações dos seres humanos. No intuito de analisar os efeitos dessas mudanças globais na bacia do Rio Tapajós, este trabalho mensura os efeitos das mudanças climáticas e de uso e cobertura da terra na resposta hidrológica da bacia. O Modelo Hidrológico Distribuído do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (MHD-INPE), previamente calibrado e validado com os dados observados da Agência Nacional de Águas (ANA), foi utilizado para obter as projeções. O MHD foi alimentado com projeções de mudanças no clima do modelo atmosférico ETA-INPE e também com projeções dos modelos globais utilizados pelo CMIP5: IPSL e HadGEM2. As projeções de mudanças de uso do solo e cobertura vegetal foram obtidas através do projeto LuccME/Amazônia.Os impactos foram avaliados através da comparação das curvas de duração de descargas das diferentes simulações nos períodos futuros 2011-2040, 2041-2070 e 2071-2100. Essa metodologia permite estudar as alterações em termos de produção hídrica, sazonalidade e eventos extremos entre experimentos que consideram apenas as mudanças climáticas e experimentos que consideram ambas as mudanças, climáticas e de uso do solo. Os resultados obtidos com mudanças climáticas e mudanças climáticas mais uso do solo demonstram um decremento nas descargas simuladas na maioria dos modelos em estudos exceto o cenário IPSL que possui um aumento de precipitação na época úmida. Os períodos de cheias não sofreram mudanças na localização de máximos, porém, os mínimos na época seca, em alguns casos, atrasou um mês se comparado às vazões do período histórico. Os resultados das simulações mostram que os efeitos do desflorestamento na bacia podem, em parte, compensar os efeitos das mudanças climáticas nas vazões.

The Atmospheric Electricity Group (ELAT) from CCST / INPE had developed an accurate methodology for cloud-to-ground lightning warning with one hour in advance for regions with less than 100 km2. Based on real-time total lightning data provided by lightning detection network, electrostatic field-mill measurements, IR satellite images, and weather radar images, cloud-to-ground lightning warnings are issued based on the probability of a thunderstorm to occur in a particular region. This approach is very attractive because for specific regions (like airports, soccer stadiums, oil refineries, mining, parks, etc.), the forecast based only on numerical models or radar images is not suitably accurate in time and/or spatial domains. The main purpose of issuing lightning warnings with some lead time is to protect human life from lightning threads while in outdoor activities. Main results are: less than 20% of false alarms, lead time of about 30 to 40min and warning total duration of about 02 to 03h. The paper also presents a comprehensive risk analysis of lighting threads for outdoor activities showing risk maps for different scenarios as a function of the time of exposure and level of protection. An example, a lightning warning system that combines total lightning data and numerical model simulations is also discussed illustrating how it can predict the occurrence of a severe storm in a particular region with a lead time of 30 min and thus help preventing human casualties.
