Para compreender os processos de emissão, transformação e contaminação da atmosfera urbana por poluentes é muito importante observar diferentes parâmetros de qualidade para identificar e quantificar espécies químicas, principalmente em áreas com forte influência antropogênicas, pois a atividade industrial e a frota de veículos automotores são os principais responsáveis pela emissão de gases e particulados na atmosfera. Em meio a outros poluentes atmosféricos, o material particulado inalável em suspensão (com diâmetro aerodinâmico menor que 10 μm) tem grande importância devido à sua composição química complexa, suas propriedades físicas e os impactos nocivos na saúde humana. Neste estudo de caso, a composição química do material particulado inalável (MP10) foi determinada dosando-se os ânions (cloreto, nitrato e sulfato) e os cátions (sódio, amônio, potássio, cálcio e magnésio) maiores no extrato aquoso. Os protocolos analíticos para a dosagem dos diferentes íons já foram implementados e descritos no relatório anterior com a apresentação dos estudos estatísticos relativos à determinação da precisão e exatidão dos protocolos juntamente com a comparação entre os resultados da estação chuvosa com a seca. A atividade realizada até o presente é a elaboração de um protocolo para o uso da técnica de análise por injeção em fluxo (FIA) para a determinação de amônio em águas doces e em efluentes para ser utilizado no Laboratório de Aerossóis, Soluções Aquosas e Tecnologias e que foi de forma eficiente aplicado ao estudo da composição química das espécies solúveis de nitrogênio reativo presentes no material particulado inalável.

This work presents a preliminary method for the evaluation of location accuracy of all Lightning Location System (LLS) in operation in southeastern Brazil (e.g. BrasilDAT, RINDAT, StarNet, WWLLN, GLD360), using natural cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes. This can be done through a multiple high-speed cameras network (RAMMER network) installed in the Paraiba Valley region SP Brazil. The RAMMER network (Automated Multi-camera Network for Monitoring and Study of Lightning) is composed by four high-speed cameras operating at 2,500 frames per second. Three stationary black-and-white (B&W) cameras were situated in the cities of São José dos Campos and Caçapava. A fourth color camera was mobile (installed in a car), but operated in a fixed location during the observation period, within the city of São José dos Campos. The average distance among cameras was 13 kilometers. Each RAMMER sensor position was determined so that the network can observe the same lightning flash from different angles and all recorded videos were GPS (Global Position System) time stamped, allowing comparisons of events between cameras and the LLS. The RAMMER sensor is basically composed by a computer, a Phantom high-speed camera version 9.1 and a GPS unit. The lightning cases analyzed in the present work were observed by at least two cameras, their position was visually triangulated and the results compared with BrasilDAT network, during the summer seasons of 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The visual triangulation method is presented in details. The calibration procedure showed an accuracy of 9 meters between the accurate GPS position of the object triangulated and the result from the visual triangulation method. Lightning return stroke positions, estimated with the visual triangulation method, were compared with LLS locations. Differences between solutions were not greater than 1.8 km.

A global assessment of precipitation chemistry and deposition has been carried out under the direction of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Scientific Advisory Group for Precipitation Chemistry (SAG-PC). The assessment addressed three questions: (1) what do measurements and model estimates of precipitation chemistry and wet, dry and total deposition of sulfur, nitrogen, sea salt, base cations, organic acids, acidity, and phosphorus show globally and regionally? (2) has the wet deposition of major ions changed since 2000 (and, where information and data are available, since 1990) and (3) what are the major gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge? To that end, regionally-representative measurements for two 3-year-averaging periods, 20002002 and 20052007, were compiled worldwide. Data from the 20002002 averaging period were combined with 2001 ensemble-mean modeling results from 21 global chemical transport models produced in Phase 1 of the Coordinated Model Studies Activities of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (TF HTAP). The measurement data and modeling results were used to generate global and regional maps of major ion concentrations in precipitation and deposition. A major product of the assessment is a database of quality assured ion concentration and wet deposition data gathered from regional and national monitoring networks. The database is available for download from the World Data Centre for Precipitation Chemistry (http://wdcpc.org/). The assessment concludes that global concentrations and deposition of sulfur and nitrogen are reasonably well characterized with levels generally highest near emission sources and more than an order of magnitude lower in areas largely free of anthropogenic influences. In many parts of the world, wet deposition of reduced nitrogen exceeds that of oxidized nitrogen and is increasing. Sulfur and nitrogen concentrations and deposition in North America and Europe have declined significantly in line with emission reduction policies. Major regions of the world, including South America, the more remote areas of North America, much of Asia, Africa, Oceania, polar regions, and all of the oceans, are inadequately sampled for all of the major ions in wet and dry deposition, and particularly so for phosphorus, organic forms of nitrogen, and weak acids including carbonates and organic acids. Measurement-based inferential estimates of dry deposition are limited to sulfur and some nitrogen in only a few regions of the world and methods are highly uncertain. The assessment concludes with recommendations to address major gaps and uncertainties in global ion concentration and deposition measurements.

This work examined observationally the Urban Heat Island (UHI) of Manaus city, Brazil. For this, data collected from two different sites, in an urban area and from a region of forest about 30 km from city, for the period of 20002008, were used. The results show that the urban environment creates a local increase in temperature and a decrease in relative humidity. The annual average observed between the urban and forest sites can reach differences of temperatures around 3 °C and relative humidity close to 1.7%. An interesting feature of the UHI of Manaus is associated with a diurnal cycle that differs from other studies for different locations in the world, with two peaks of highest intensity, one at 0800 LST and one between the 1500 and 1700 LST. It also highlighted that the urban area tends to heat first and more slowly and cool down later and faster than the forest, which explains the distinct behaviour of the diurnal cycle of the UHI. The obtained knowledge of the Manaus UHI allows the implementation of policies and methodologies that aim to improve the quality of life and comfort of large urban cities, such as those studied.

We analysed spectral and textural attributes from the Advanced Land Imager (ALI)/EO-1 for land-cover mapping and inspected their correlation with biophysical parameters of primary and secondary forests from Eastern Amazon. An artificial neural network (ANN) technique selected the most relevant spectral/textural attributes, which were combined for classification of the ALI scene. From the ANN land-cover map, areas classified as primary forest (PF), initial (SS1), intermediate (SS2) and advanced (SS3) stages of secondary succession were studied. Biophysical parameters were determined from field inventory of 40 sample plots. Results showed an overall classification accuracy of 79% using reflectance and 89% using the combined data set. The combined data set included the reflectance of ALI bands 39 and the texture metrics mean (bands 34; 68) and dissimilarity (band 8). The reflectance of the near-infrared/shortwave infrared bands and their texture mean decreased from SS1 to SS3/PF. The gradient between primary and secondary forests controlled the correlations of reflectance with biophysical parameters. While the aboveground biomass, basal area, leaf area index, tree height and canopy cover increased from SS1 to SS3/PF, the reflectance decreased with the development of canopy structure and the resultant canopy shadows. The mean was the only texture metric correlated with biophysical parameters.

Amazon tropical forests are being replaced by pasturelands and croplands, but they sometimes revert to regrowth forest when abandoned after a period of agricultural use. Research suggests that this secondary regrowth is limited by climate and nutrient availability and, using a coupled biosphere-atmosphere model, we investigated patterns in the regrowth of the Amazon rainforest after a full deforestation event, considering different types of nutrient stress. We found that, over a 50 year regrowth period, the reduction of precipitation caused by large-scale deforestation was not sufficient to prevent secondary forest regrowth, but this decrease in precipitation combined with nutrient limitation, due to logging and frequent fires, did indeed prevent forest regrowth in central and southern Amazonia, leading to a savannization. These results are concerning, as the northern Mato Grosso region has the highest clearing rate in Amazonia. The low resilience of the forest under nutrient stress indicates that a large scale disturbance could greatly expand the area suitable for cropland, accelerating forest disappearance.

High-speed video records of two bipolar cloud-to-ground flashes were analyzed in detail. They both began with a single positive return stroke that was followed by more than one subsequent weak negative stroke. Due to the elevated cloud base height of its parent thunderstorm, the preparatory processes of each subsequent negative stroke were documented optically below cloud base. In the first event (Case 1) it was observed that all four subsequent negative strokes were initiated by recoil leaders that retraced one horizontal channel segment previously ionized by the positive leader. Those recoil leaders connected to the original vertical channel segment and propagated toward ground, producing four subsequent strokes that had the same ground contact point as the original positive discharge. The second event (Case 2), in contrast, presented 15 subsequent strokes that were initiated by recoil leaders that did not reach the original channel of the positive stroke. They diverged vertically toward ground, making contact approximately 11 km away from the original positive strike point. These results constitute the first optical evidence that both single- and multiple-channel bipolar flashes occur as a consequence of recoil leader activity in the branches of the initial positive return stroke. For both events their total channel length increased continuously at a rate of the order of 104 m s-1, comparable to speeds reported for typical positive leaders. Operational records of power outages of the electric energy distribution systems in eastern Amazonia presented a large number of events attributed to lightning strikes, during the 2006 to 2009 period. The regional electricity concessionary data were compared to actual lightning observations made by SIPAMs LDN system, over two areas where operational sub systems of transmission lines are installed. Statistical relations were drawn between the monthly lightning occurrence density and the number of power outages of the electric systems for both areas studied. The results showed that, although with some delays between these variables peaks, the number of power disruptions has a tendency to follow the behavior of the lightning occurrence densities variations. The numerical correlations were positive and may be useful to the transmission lines maintenance crews at least for the Belém-Castanhal electricity distribution sub system. Evidence was found, that the SSTs over certain areas of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, influence convection over the area of interest, and may help to prognosticate the periods of intense electric storms, requiring repair readiness for the regional electric systems.

O Índice de Precipitação Normalizada (SPI) é utilizado para quantificar o déficit e/ou excesso de precipitação nas múltiplas escalas de tempo. Ele tem se mostrado bastante útil no monitoramento da precipitação, principalmente pela sua flexibilidade, simplicidade de cálculo e interpretação. Desta forma este estudo tem como objetivo quantificar os eventos extremos secos e chuvosos na cidade de Belém-PA nas escalas de tempo de 3, 6 e 12 meses por meio do SPI. Para isto, utilizaram-se dados mensais de precipitação provenientes da estação meteorológicas de superfície do INMET no período de 1980-2011. Os resultados mostraram que a escala de tempo do SPI é inversamente proporcional à frequência dos eventos de chuva e seca. Os SPIs 3, 6 e 12 mostraram mais eventos secos do que chuvosos para a cidade e a maioria dos eventos de chuva e seca estavam associados, principalmente, ao fenômeno ENOS. ABSTRACT: The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is used to quantify the deficit/ excess rainfall at multiple time scales. It has been very useful in monitoring of precipitation, mainly because of its flexibility, ease of calculation and interpretation. Thus this study aims to quantify the extreme wet and dry events in the city of Belém-PA in time scales of 3, 6 and 12 months by SPI. For this, we used monthly precipitation data from meteorological station at the INMET in the period 1980-2011. The results show that the timescale of the SPI is inversely proportional to the frequency of rain and dry events. The SPIs 3.6 and 12 showed driest events that rainy events to the city and most of the rainfall and drought events were associated, mainly, with the ENSO phenomenon.

O método da Análise Fatorial em Componentes Principais e dos Agrupamentos Hierárquicos foram utilizados para determinar os padrões principais de variabilidade temporal e espacial, assim como identificação dos grupos homogêneos, da precipitação no Estado do Pará. Para isso utilizaram-se dados mensais de 72 postos pluviométricos distribuídos no Estado do Pará. As três primeiras Componentes Principais explicaram 92,91% da variância total dos dados mensais de precipitação. O Primeiro padrão espacial definiu áreas de chuva que são influenciadas pela atuação da Zona de Convergência Intertropical (ZCIT). O segundo padrão espacial está associado a sistemas transientes ou até mesmo da Zona de Convergência do Atlântico Sul que favorecem as chuvas na região no final da primavera e no início do verão austral. Já o terceiro padrão espacial evidencia a influência da atuação da ZCIT, das linhas de instabilidade e da convecção local. Identificaram-se e caracterizaram-se três regiões homogêneas (RH-1, RH-2 e RH-3) em relação à variabilidade sazonal de precipitação no Estado do Pará. A RH-1 ocupa as porções noroeste-nordeste do Estado com maior volume pluviométrico, a RH-2 está situada na região central do Pará e a RH-3 localizada no sudoeste-sudeste do Estado com menor índice pluviométrico.

Today, the volume of data generated in almost all disciplines, particularly in meteorology and climate science, is dramatically increasing. Among the challenges generated by this data deluge is the development of efficient knowledge discovery strategies. Here, we show that statistical and computational tools used to analyze large data sets of genome-wide studies can be fruitfully applied to a climatic context. Although not as powerful as some techniques already in use by climatologists, these tools are simple and robust, and can easily be adapted to detect early warning signals for extreme events like droughts or be used to filter large data sets before applying other more advanced and computationally expensive methods. We test this approach in our investigation of the causes of the Amazon droughts of 2005 and 2010. Our results highlight the major role played in these extreme events by the warming of the seas surface temperature, mainly in the tropical North Atlantic. Our findings are in agreement with several analyses published in the literature. The main message we convey is that free and open-source data mining and visualization techniques routinely used in genetic studies can be useful in helping scientists to extract knowledge from large climatic data sets, particularly in regions of the world that are vulnerable to climate change but where the availability of technical expertise is critically scarce.

Numerical studies on impacts of landscape fragmentation due to land use and land cover change (LUCC) on precipitation fields over the Ji-Paraná basin in the Amazon region are carried out using atmospheric Eta model. Experiments consider historical data about LUCC over the basin from 1978 to 2000 and compare simulations under LUCC conditions with simulations under pristine conditions. In agreement with previous observational studies, model results do not show statistically significant impacts on precipitation in the region. Results indicate that variability in precipitation in this region is mainly controlled by large-scale atmospheric characteristics and soil moisture conditions. However, some limitations are identified in the model simulations, mainly associated to the diurnal cycle of precipitation.
