O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar o comportamento sazonal fenológico da vegetação no bioma Caatinga por meio do índice EVI em regiões com diferentes padrões de precipitação. A área estudada corresponde a três transectos paralelos entre si cortando longitudinalmente o bioma, o qual foi dividido em duas classes climatológicas de precipitação, C1 (622,63mm) e C2 (928,39mm). Para as análises da vegetação foram utilizadas as métricas de sazonalidade: início, fim, comprimento, amplitude e integral-L (efeito acumulativo do EVI por ciclo de crescimento); a partir de séries temporais de EVI do período 2000 a 2012. Foram identificados 12 ciclos de crescimento da vegetação em ambas as classes, as médias para o período analisado indicam que o início dos ciclos foi em 17 de novembro (21,97) e 16 de outubro (19,73); o fim em 28 de julho (37,10) e 12 de julho (36,14); o comprimento da estação foi de 225 dias (15,13) e 241 dias (16,40); a amplitude EVI de 0,38 (dp: 0,23) e 0,34 (dp: 0,10); e a integral-L de 6,64 e 7,95, para as classes C1 e C2, respectivamente. A vegetação demonstrou comportamentos diferenciados, sendo que C1 teve maior sazonalidade e menor cobertura vegetal (integral-L) do que C2 que teve menor sazonalidade e maior cobertura, evidenciando assim que em regiões semiáridas a fenologia das espécies é bastante influenciada pela condição hídrica.

As variações climáticas estão sendo estudadas e observadas em todo mundo e suas consequências mais severas comprometem a sustentabilidade do planeta. O aquecimento global, por exemplo, contribui para a diminuição e escassez de água para consumo humano, animal e para irrigação, além de intensificar os processos que comprometem a disponibilidade de terras férteis para a produção de alimento, como a desertificação. A região semiárida nordestina, bem como o Estado do Ceará, tem peculiaridades intrínsecas que corroboram com o desencadeamento do processo de desertificação. Esse processo é resultado da variação climática (incidência de secas mais frequentes e mais severas), das ações antrópicas desordenadas associadas aos fatores físicos locais. Tais aspectos contribuem para que a população local se torne, ou não, vulnerável às adversidades socioambientais que estão submetidas. Neste contexto, essa pesquisa tem como objetivos: 1) identificar os fatores que contribuem para o aumento ou redução da vulnerabilidade da população residente nos municípios cearenses e 2) entender como esses fatores interferem na vulnerabilidade da população que está triplamente exposta (desertificação, seca e pobreza), além de explicar como essa exposição é influenciada pelas políticas de gestão de risco. Para tanto, será desenvolvido um quadro socioambiental da vulnerabilidade obtido por meio de um índice que levará em consideração a exposição, a sensibilidade e a capacidade adaptativa da população. Após esse procedimento, será realizada uma avaliação político-institucional com intuito de investigar os aspectos políticos, institucionais e de políticas públicas que favorecem ou não o desenvolvimento da capacidade adaptativa da população em questão. Esta avaliação permitirá aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre a capacidade adaptativa da população cearense frente às adversidades relacionadas aos processos de desertificação, à pobreza e à seca. Permitirá, ainda, uma demonstração no tempo e no espaço de como as políticas públicas estão contribuindo (ou não) para a redução da vulnerabilidade da população local, além de listar alternativas de ações que complementem essas políticas já existentes.

A desertificação é resultante de vários fatores, incluindo as variações climáticas e as atividades humanas e é considerado um dos maiores obstáculos ao desenvolvimento das regiões secas do planeta. O Nordeste é a região do Brasil que apresenta maiores problemas ambientais de degradação de terras e desertificação. Nas últimas décadas, essa região tem passado por intensas transformações motivadas principalmente pelo substancial aumento demográfico e pelo desenvolvimento econômico intenso. Tais transformações têm impactado significativamente o uso da terra e a degradação ambiental nesta região. Parte da região nordeste, principalmente o sertão, tem no setor primário (produção agrícola e pecuária extensiva), uma importante fonte de renda para parte da população. Geralmente, a produção se caracteriza por uma pecuária extensiva e agricultura de subsistência de baixo investimento e produtividade que, devido à falta de estratégias alternativas, faz com que os produtores utilizem os recursos naturais de maneira intensiva e abusiva. Neste sentido, este trabalho tem por objetivo analisar, considerando escala regional, a contribuição da pecuária para a intensificação da vulnerabilidade aos processos de desertificação no Nordeste por meio de uma abordagem multiescala, combinando métodos quantitativos e qualitativos, em especial modelos dinâmicos espacialmente explícitos. A análise regional buscará por meio de análise estatística multivariada, correlacionar áreas susceptíveis a desertificação a fatores relacionados à pecuária (como cobertura, técnicas de manejo, estrutura agraria, etc). A análise local baseia-se no conceito de emergência (do verbo emergir) que busca entender um determinado processo por meio da descrição dos atores nele envolvidas e das interações entre eles. Esta abordagem permite uma exploração mais robusta das características dos agentes, como imperfeições na racionalidade para tomadas de decisão, estruturas sociais e institucionais e comportamento. Espera-se determinar as regiões (áreas) que apresentam maior vulnerabilidade à degradação da terra, colaborando para o melhor entendimento da interação entre pecuária e desertificação, visando identificar e quantificar os fatores que contribuem para o incremento da vulnerabilidade ao processo de desertificação. Ademais, espera-se que o arcabouço de modelagem adotado sirva como ferramenta de monitoramento e planejamento estratégico no enfrentamento da degradação da terra na região Nordeste, no que se refere, principalmente, às práticas de adaptação e mitigação, visando à manutenção ou a melhoria das perspectivas de sustentabilidade da atividade, bem como da região.

Na iniciação cientifica pelo PIBIC, que está sendo desenvolvido no DGE/INPE entre os anos de 2013 e o ano vigente, destacam-se entre as tarefas efetuadas, as coletas de dados de tempestades registrados por radares meteorológicos e imagens de satélite, e a análise de vídeos gravados a partir de câmeras de alta resolução, onde é possível identificar as características de um relâmpago. Através desses vídeos é possível observar de forma mais detalhada os raios ascendentes, que são um tipo do fenômeno atmosférico o qual o grupo de pesquisa, em que é realizado a IC, tem pesquisado.

Two Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) events that occurred in the southern portion of South America will be analyzed in order to characterize the local lightning activity related with different synoptic situations. On December 10-11, 2012, a MCS, originated by a cyclone centered over the Atlantic Ocean, presented an organized convective activity moving northeastward. This MCS formed in an area of baroclinic flow in the vanguard of a cold front. This feature was trivial in determining MCS displacement velocity, and consequently lightning density in the region. The other MCS that occurred on December 12-13, 2012 was generated by a low pressure area located in the central region of South America (Chaco Low), and showed disorganized convective activity moving (northwestward). This MCS formed due mainly thermodynamic factors in the lower troposphere and divergence in the upper troposphere by the interaction of the subtropical jet. In both MCSs lightning density in the region was influenced by the synoptic situation which the MCS was formed. Being influenced by the velocity and direction of MCS displacement. The rate of occurrence and polarity of lightning as well as the IC/CG and CG+/CG- rates were not affected by the different conditions that the MCSs were formed.The data set used in the present study will consider: (1) lightning location and polarity from BrasilDAT, (2) analysis and forecasts from WRF model, and (3) infrared channel data from Satellite GOES-12.

The objective of the present work is to analyze one thunderstorm day that produced lightning with peculiar characteristi cs, different from those commonly found in other works on the literature. The data was obtained by the RAMMER network, composed by four high – speed cameras, during the summer of 2012/2013 in the city of São José dos Campos, Brazil. The relatively large numb er of high – speed cameras has enabled us to record a statistically significant amount of negative cloud – to – ground lightning flashes per thunderstorm day. We chose as control – cases the five days that had the highest amount of lightning recorded by the camera s, making a total of 361 flashes. The analysis was performed in two ways, the first one considering the control – cases and the second one considering only the case study. After analyzing all lightning data we found that the geometric mean of the flash durat ion was 270 ms, the average multiplicity was 4.3 and the percentage of single strokes was 20.8% (75 events ). These values are similar to those found in previous single – station studies for the same region. The case study of this work is February 22 nd , 2013, which had a sample size of 55 negative cloud – to – ground lightning. The visible lightning characteristics for this day were: a) flash duration geometric mean of 193 ms; b) an average multiplicity of 2.8; and c) a percentage of single stroke flashes, around 36.4% (20). Also, an evaluation of the sample obtained on that day was performed using lightning location system BrasilDAT. After the evaluation of the statistical tests, we point out the following three hypotheses which will be addressed in the work: a) s ynoptic condition of the day: the weather phenomenon acting in the region during that day may have favored the formation of clouds with smaller vertical development, thus leading to temporally shorter and single – stroke flashes; b) region of occurrence of l ightning: the topography can influence the formation of clouds in order to create the necessary conditions for the occurrence of anomalous features; and c) observation period: it is possible that the flashes have been observed during the initial phase of t he development of the thunder clouds, which would be directly related to observed characteristics. Satellite and radar images will also be used as complementarily tools for the analysis, which is currently under development.

Para compreender os processos de emissão, transformação e contaminação da atmosfera urbana por poluentes é muito importante observar diferentes parâmetros de qualidade para identificar e quantificar espécies químicas, principalmente em áreas com forte influência antropogênicas, pois a atividade industrial e a frota de veículos automotores são os principais responsáveis pela emissão de gases e particulados na atmosfera. Em meio a outros poluentes atmosféricos, o material particulado inalável em suspensão (com diâmetro aerodinâmico menor que 10 μm) tem grande importância devido à sua composição química complexa, suas propriedades físicas e os impactos nocivos na saúde humana. Neste estudo de caso, a composição química do material particulado inalável (MP10) foi determinada dosando-se os ânions (cloreto, nitrato e sulfato) e os cátions (sódio, amônio, potássio, cálcio e magnésio) maiores no extrato aquoso. Os protocolos analíticos para a dosagem dos diferentes íons já foram implementados e descritos no relatório anterior com a apresentação dos estudos estatísticos relativos à determinação da precisão e exatidão dos protocolos juntamente com a comparação entre os resultados da estação chuvosa com a seca. A atividade realizada até o presente é a elaboração de um protocolo para o uso da técnica de análise por injeção em fluxo (FIA) para a determinação de amônio em águas doces e em efluentes para ser utilizado no Laboratório de Aerossóis, Soluções Aquosas e Tecnologias e que foi de forma eficiente aplicado ao estudo da composição química das espécies solúveis de nitrogênio reativo presentes no material particulado inalável.

This work presents a preliminary method for the evaluation of location accuracy of all Lightning Location System (LLS) in operation in southeastern Brazil (e.g. BrasilDAT, RINDAT, StarNet, WWLLN, GLD360), using natural cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes. This can be done through a multiple high-speed cameras network (RAMMER network) installed in the Paraiba Valley region SP Brazil. The RAMMER network (Automated Multi-camera Network for Monitoring and Study of Lightning) is composed by four high-speed cameras operating at 2,500 frames per second. Three stationary black-and-white (B&W) cameras were situated in the cities of São José dos Campos and Caçapava. A fourth color camera was mobile (installed in a car), but operated in a fixed location during the observation period, within the city of São José dos Campos. The average distance among cameras was 13 kilometers. Each RAMMER sensor position was determined so that the network can observe the same lightning flash from different angles and all recorded videos were GPS (Global Position System) time stamped, allowing comparisons of events between cameras and the LLS. The RAMMER sensor is basically composed by a computer, a Phantom high-speed camera version 9.1 and a GPS unit. The lightning cases analyzed in the present work were observed by at least two cameras, their position was visually triangulated and the results compared with BrasilDAT network, during the summer seasons of 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The visual triangulation method is presented in details. The calibration procedure showed an accuracy of 9 meters between the accurate GPS position of the object triangulated and the result from the visual triangulation method. Lightning return stroke positions, estimated with the visual triangulation method, were compared with LLS locations. Differences between solutions were not greater than 1.8 km.

A global assessment of precipitation chemistry and deposition has been carried out under the direction of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Scientific Advisory Group for Precipitation Chemistry (SAG-PC). The assessment addressed three questions: (1) what do measurements and model estimates of precipitation chemistry and wet, dry and total deposition of sulfur, nitrogen, sea salt, base cations, organic acids, acidity, and phosphorus show globally and regionally? (2) has the wet deposition of major ions changed since 2000 (and, where information and data are available, since 1990) and (3) what are the major gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge? To that end, regionally-representative measurements for two 3-year-averaging periods, 20002002 and 20052007, were compiled worldwide. Data from the 20002002 averaging period were combined with 2001 ensemble-mean modeling results from 21 global chemical transport models produced in Phase 1 of the Coordinated Model Studies Activities of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (TF HTAP). The measurement data and modeling results were used to generate global and regional maps of major ion concentrations in precipitation and deposition. A major product of the assessment is a database of quality assured ion concentration and wet deposition data gathered from regional and national monitoring networks. The database is available for download from the World Data Centre for Precipitation Chemistry (http://wdcpc.org/). The assessment concludes that global concentrations and deposition of sulfur and nitrogen are reasonably well characterized with levels generally highest near emission sources and more than an order of magnitude lower in areas largely free of anthropogenic influences. In many parts of the world, wet deposition of reduced nitrogen exceeds that of oxidized nitrogen and is increasing. Sulfur and nitrogen concentrations and deposition in North America and Europe have declined significantly in line with emission reduction policies. Major regions of the world, including South America, the more remote areas of North America, much of Asia, Africa, Oceania, polar regions, and all of the oceans, are inadequately sampled for all of the major ions in wet and dry deposition, and particularly so for phosphorus, organic forms of nitrogen, and weak acids including carbonates and organic acids. Measurement-based inferential estimates of dry deposition are limited to sulfur and some nitrogen in only a few regions of the world and methods are highly uncertain. The assessment concludes with recommendations to address major gaps and uncertainties in global ion concentration and deposition measurements.

This work examined observationally the Urban Heat Island (UHI) of Manaus city, Brazil. For this, data collected from two different sites, in an urban area and from a region of forest about 30 km from city, for the period of 20002008, were used. The results show that the urban environment creates a local increase in temperature and a decrease in relative humidity. The annual average observed between the urban and forest sites can reach differences of temperatures around 3 °C and relative humidity close to 1.7%. An interesting feature of the UHI of Manaus is associated with a diurnal cycle that differs from other studies for different locations in the world, with two peaks of highest intensity, one at 0800 LST and one between the 1500 and 1700 LST. It also highlighted that the urban area tends to heat first and more slowly and cool down later and faster than the forest, which explains the distinct behaviour of the diurnal cycle of the UHI. The obtained knowledge of the Manaus UHI allows the implementation of policies and methodologies that aim to improve the quality of life and comfort of large urban cities, such as those studied.

We analysed spectral and textural attributes from the Advanced Land Imager (ALI)/EO-1 for land-cover mapping and inspected their correlation with biophysical parameters of primary and secondary forests from Eastern Amazon. An artificial neural network (ANN) technique selected the most relevant spectral/textural attributes, which were combined for classification of the ALI scene. From the ANN land-cover map, areas classified as primary forest (PF), initial (SS1), intermediate (SS2) and advanced (SS3) stages of secondary succession were studied. Biophysical parameters were determined from field inventory of 40 sample plots. Results showed an overall classification accuracy of 79% using reflectance and 89% using the combined data set. The combined data set included the reflectance of ALI bands 39 and the texture metrics mean (bands 34; 68) and dissimilarity (band 8). The reflectance of the near-infrared/shortwave infrared bands and their texture mean decreased from SS1 to SS3/PF. The gradient between primary and secondary forests controlled the correlations of reflectance with biophysical parameters. While the aboveground biomass, basal area, leaf area index, tree height and canopy cover increased from SS1 to SS3/PF, the reflectance decreased with the development of canopy structure and the resultant canopy shadows. The mean was the only texture metric correlated with biophysical parameters.

Amazon tropical forests are being replaced by pasturelands and croplands, but they sometimes revert to regrowth forest when abandoned after a period of agricultural use. Research suggests that this secondary regrowth is limited by climate and nutrient availability and, using a coupled biosphere-atmosphere model, we investigated patterns in the regrowth of the Amazon rainforest after a full deforestation event, considering different types of nutrient stress. We found that, over a 50 year regrowth period, the reduction of precipitation caused by large-scale deforestation was not sufficient to prevent secondary forest regrowth, but this decrease in precipitation combined with nutrient limitation, due to logging and frequent fires, did indeed prevent forest regrowth in central and southern Amazonia, leading to a savannization. These results are concerning, as the northern Mato Grosso region has the highest clearing rate in Amazonia. The low resilience of the forest under nutrient stress indicates that a large scale disturbance could greatly expand the area suitable for cropland, accelerating forest disappearance.
